If you are old enough to remember 1964, you will recall that this was the year that Tokyo hosted the summer Olympic games. It is hard to express just how important this was to Japan. It was only 20 years after the war, and Japan saw this as their one good chance to reintroduce themselves to the world. A chance to show not only how the politics had changed but also how the industry had matured to one of the world's leaders. Pilot played a big part in the Tokyo Olympics. They were an official sponsor and released The Elite, hoping to show the world it's innovations. The Elite truly had a revolutionary design: a short barrel and an extra long cap. When the cap was posted, the pen was a regular full-sized pen. But when the cap was closed over the nib, the pen became a short, easy to carry pen.
