THE FILLMORE EAST GRATEFUL DEAD PHOTO BY A. R. ROTHSCHILD ALONG WITH HER AUTOGRAPHED MEMOIR ENTITLED LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST ( WITH FOREWARD BY MICKEY HART) Up for auction is simply a piece of rock and roll history -- anyone whom has every had the pleasure of going to concerts and hanging out at both of the Fillmore's -- East and West knows what I am talking about. Technically, this is a limited edition black and white Silver Gelatin photo print captured by Amalie R. Rothschild (#16 of 250) in her role as unofficial house photographer on the evening of January 2nd, 1970 as the Grateful Dead performed live at the Fillmore East on the Lower East side of Manhattan. It is extremely large, with the image measuring 23" x 16" and the framed dimensions being 30" x 26". January 2nd, 1970 . . . The "Perfect Storm" when the new decade usd in both hope and trepidation, Bill Graham was genius, the venue was intimate, the Lower East side was trying to catch up to the West Coast music scene, the Dead was well the Dead, and Amalie R. Rothschild as house photographer was still the Hall of Famer that she is and was going to be . . . As Rothschild says on pg. 20 of the autographed book included in this auction -- notwithstanding her having shot The Allman Brothers, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, CSN&Y, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac, John Fogerty, Jefferson Airplane, Elton John, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Mannfred Mann, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Santana, Rod Stewart, James Taylor and Frank Zappa, amongst others at the FE -- "The Grateful Dead at Fillmore East January 2nd, 1970. I consider this to be my definitive F.E. concert shot. It was rare that I could get all the members of the band clearly visible with uniform lighting, and even rarer to be able to include and see the audience as well." In terms of the autographed memoir/book (the 1st edition which is now on its 5th edition hardback printing), which was a labor of love dedicated to Bill Graham in celebration to his passing, impact and memory by Rothschild, a fair summary would as follows: Amalie Rothschild offers an insight into the late sixties rock scene at the Fillmore East born of intimate familiarity. Today an acclaimed photographer and documentary film producer, the then graduate film student at NYU became the unofficial house photographer at the venue in 1969 and chronicled the behind-the- scenes activity, quiet moments and unexpected tableaus until its closing in June, 1971. Her access was unlimited and her eye impeccable in photographs ranging from impromptu performer gatherings and crowd shots to light show scenes. The black and white photographs are accompanied by text, written by the artist, which place the pictures in context and include comments from show performers and producers. The book also includes a handy list of every concert performed at the Fillmore East. Mickey Hart states in the foreward, "Amalie R. Rothschild's pictures bring back the entire Fillmore East experience in vivid detail. My favorite memories of the Fillmore East are playing all night. T was no curfew -- the second shows were the best and we could go on and on until dawn . . . Rock and roll was a baby back then and Bill Graham was its midwife -- he birthed the modern version of a rock and roll concert . . . For a few short, memorable years, the Fillmore East was w we played it best." Amalie R. Rothschild has a multi-faceted background in Graphic Design, Photography, Computer Imaging, Motion Picture and Video Production. She has a BFA (1967) in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design w she studied photography with Harry Callahan, and an MFA (1969) in Film Production from New York University's Institute of Film and Television w she also studied photography with Paul Caponigro.
