The Lakewood Hotel, Lakewood, NJ, 1900 Lake Carasaljo From a vast collection of paper ephemera from several of the grand resort hotels of the turn of the 19th century. Most of our material comes from The Frontenac Hotel, Round Island, Thousand Islands area on the Saint Lawrence River, Wentworth Hall, Jackson, NH, Mount Kineo House, Kineo, ME, Moosehead Lake region, The Lakewood Hotel, Lakewood NJ, The Raymond Hotel, Pasadena CA, and the Hygeia Hotel, Old Point Comfort, VA.
The group of material offered is from the Lakewood Hotel, Lakewood, NJ, c. 1900 - 1905. This is part of a unique collection. Included in the group of material offered are: A photograph, 3 1/2"x3 1/2", taken from the second floor of the East Wing of the hotel of the West Wing. We also see the hotel's courtyard and a bit of it's facade. The photo is inscribed, "Rescued from the wreck. Showing the Court front after the snowstorm of Feb 17th (1900) taken 9:30 a.m. Feb 18th. From second story window of the East Wing with my new camera." Lakewood Hotel Easter Menu, dated inside, April 12, 1903. We would start with the Blue Point Oysters, move on to the Clear Green Turtle aux Quenelle de Volaille, snack on the olives, Westphalia Ham, Cavier on Toast and Canape Lorenzo, then, maybe Boiled Striped Bass. For the entree we would have been torn between the Prime Ribs of Beef and the Spring Lamb. We would finish off, foregoing lavish desserts, with Broiled Squab on Toast au Cresson. Well, we know we can't have the food, but you can have the menu. The season opens at Lakewood, "Mr James N. Berry begs to announce The Lakewood will open for the season of 1900-1901 on Saturday, November seventeenth, nineteen hundred. Lakewood, New Jersey." Raised engraving with the Lakewood logo in blue. Floor plan schematic for the Lakewood Hotel, shown folded, 9 1/2"x12". Detailed are The Parlor Floor, and Plans of First, Second, Third, and Fourth Floors. T is a pencil notation "86 Private Baths, 326 sleeping rooms". Fold creases, 4 small paper voids on center fold crease. On the reverse of the envelope is the Hotels's logo in green. Letter, postmarked Jan 4, 1900, manuscript 8 pages, two folded letter sheets. She describes in detail the Hotel's New Years Eve party in the ballroom. "About 11:30 the orchestra began to play a medley of patriotic pieces. The grand ball was literally packed with wealth and beauty.... (we wonder if these qualities were mutually exclusive). The rest of the party description appears in the image above.
