This large, delightful oil on canvas is attributed to Edward Charles Barnes (1831-1894) . Barnes is known for his paintings of domestic Scottish and English life, and Spanish subjects. This particular work appears to reside in its original frame, and a brass plate indicates the work is entitled "The Lucky Card" . "E.C. Barnes RBA" is also inscribed on the plate. We assume the initials "R.B.A." likely refer to his membership in the Royal Society of British Artists or 15 Royal Birmingham Society of Artists or the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists . Frame measures 31" by 44" and exposed canvas measures approximately 23" by 36". Depicted is a beautiful Spanish woman with a rose in her hair. With her right hand she points to the lucky playing card held in her left hand.
Additional images forwarded upon request. E. C. Barnes was born in Birmingham and later moved to London around 1862. He is known for his domestic scenes and interiors. He exhibited at the famed Royal Academy from 1856 to 1882. He also exhibited at the British Institute and mainly at Suffolk Street. His works consisted of small genre and domestic scenes, and also of larger Frith-type scenes of Victorian life, and as in this case, he also painted some Spanish subjects in the manner of John Phillips (1817-1867), known as "Spanish Philip", and John Bagnold Burgess (1830-1897), who specialized in Spanish and north African subjects. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1864 and exhibited as a member until 1875. Thanks for visiting, and please let us know if you have any comments or questions.
