This auction is for a display containing actual sand collected from Betio Island, I spent a week at Tarawa Atoll in November of 2003 which was the 60th anniversary of this pivotal battle w the U.S. Navy & 2nd Marine Division fought bitterly with Japanese "Rikisentai" Special Naval Landing Force Troops. By the time this horrendous 76 hour battle ended close to 6000 combatants had been killed. This neat display contains sand collected at all 6 of Betio's historic landing beaches which were named: Red Beaches 1,2 & 3, Green Beach and Black Beaches 1 & 2. The sand is housed in removable 2" vials which rest in a cherry stained, gloss finished oak display base with distintive gold on black stencil lettering. Also included with the display are 2 photo album sheets w/ 12 captioned photos showing Betio as it exists today plus a map of the island and a signed certificate of authenticity. This is a great WW2 collectable suitable for collectors, historians, veterans and family members alike... These displays are totally handcrafted by me and I personally collected all the sand that is contained in them, it's truly a one man operation. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
