Original Masao Ebina Japanese Woodblock print Woodblock Print Illustration from Murasaki's Tale of Genji Murasaki's Tale of Genji- Written in 54 chapters, the Tale of Genji is one of the earliest and greatest works of Japanese literature. It is earliest known example of the novel form. Written during the Heian Period (early 11th century) by Murasaki Shikibu, the Tale of Genji explores the trials of love, lust, patronage, and loyalty. The book does not progress through one main plot line, but instead Shikibu overlaps various story lines to create the complex tale. Prince Genji plays the central protagonist, a young man learned in speech, arts, manners, and music. Led by his heart, Genji courts various women and the book explores the relationships between man and woman, royalty and commoner. A Print from a Fantastic Series of Genji images- This wonderful print is from a lovely set of images from chapters from the Tale of Genji. They were designed by the noted artist Masao Ebina in the early 20 th century and date from the 1920's. As Mirasaki's Tale of Genji is a very early work of Japanese literature, Ebina designed this beautiful set in the Kano School style of painting with the classic sense of flattened perspectives, simplified figures and simple, straightforward color palette. These fantastic prints from the Ebina Genji series are highly sought after and are a wonderful addition to a collection or a nice opportunity to display a quintessentially Japanese antique in a room.
