It is earliest known example of the novel form. Written during the Heian Period (early 11th century) by Murasaki Shikibu, the Tale of Genji explores the trials of love, lust, patronage, and loyalty. The book does not progress through one main plot line, but instead Shikibu overlaps various story lines to create the complex tale. Prince Genji plays the central protagonist, a young man learned in speech, arts, manners, and music. Led by his heart, Genji courts various women and the book explores the relationships between man and woman, royalty and commoner.
