Description, contents and further details: The Theatrum Chemicum is the largest collection of alchemical texts ever compiled and one of the first ever publications in the field of alchemy. The complete edition contains texts by the some of the greatest thinkers of their time, amongst others Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC ), Albertus Magnus (1193? - 1280), Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274), Nicolas Flamel (born 1330) and Nicolas Barnaud (1538-1604). The two volumes at hand include 41 treatises in total, among them De veritate & antiquitate artis Chemicae... by Robertus Vallensis, De Natura luce physica... by Gerardus Dorneus as well as Compendium, De ortu & metallorum materia... and De Alchemia , both by Albertus Magnus. The volume contains over 30 different woodcut illustrations, some of them the size of half-a-page. They depict tools and schematic figures illustrating alchemical theories with symbols for stars and planets. A folding table in the second volume puts chemical elements in relation to minerals, animals, zodiac signs and planets.A beautiful woodcut vignette measuring 1.4 x 1.6 inches decorates the title page of each of the two volumes. It shows a depiction of the Scientia Immutabilis - the 'immovable science' - in the shape of an allegorical female figure wearing a helmet with an owl. Moreover, the volume contains 41 elegant woodcut initials in floral design, each over five or six lines respectively. Lazarus Zetzner was a well-known editor and printer of his time. After the first edition of the Theatrum Chemicum in four volumes he published three more editions in 1613. The fifth (1622) and the sixth (1651) edition were each increased by one volume but had to be published posthumously by his inheritors as Zetzner died in 1617/18.Apart from the Theatrum Chemicum the best-known works Zetzner printed in Strasbourg and Cologne are the Merian Bible and the Rosicrucian work Chymische Hochzeit by Christian Rosenkreutz. The edition at hand offers excellent insight into early scientific debates on alchemy. The edition's rarity and the good condition of the volume make this book a remarkable collector's item.
