Vintage Thewalt German Beer Stein

Reuge Swiss Musical Movement

1160 "Oh My Papa"

The premier of German stoneware beer steins from Thewalt . This type of stein is made only in a small area in the wooded hills of the Westerwald, not far from Coblenz on the Rhine, in Western Germany . This region is known as "Kannenbackerland" or Jug Bakers Land . The Coblenz and Hohr-Grenzhausen area is the leader in stoneware stein production.

A 9-inch high beer stein made in Germany of stoneware, raised-relief & hand painted scenic body featuring figures in traditional costume with landscaped background. The footed base is highly detailed in raised-relief design as well featuring angelic looking characters blowing on horns. The large handle is designed with a carved-wood-like pattern and on the handle is written " Western Germany ." Under the top of the handle are the numbers "1160". The solid pewter conical shaped lid attaches at the handle's highest area. The pewter lid is ornately decorated in relief design and fits snug upon the stoneware surface. The musical movement is Swiss and from the finest... Reuge . Reuge was established in 1865 by Charles Reuge. Today the company remains the top manufacturer of luxury music boxes and selected musical items. The stein plays the musical tune "Oh My Papa."

In banner format, the words "Macht nie lobens mud!" appear on one side of the stein; on the opposite side "Bier Lieb und Lied (beer dear and song)." This is my attempt at translating the words and not a complete translation at that. This stein was a gift to my grandfather when I was about 8 years old (around 1969 - 1970) and is in excellent vintage condition without damage; the painted scene is superb and the pewter wears a beautiful glowing patina. The music is lovely to listen to, but I was not allowed to play it or touch the stein when I was a child. The stein was kept in a glass cabinet.

A Handsome German Beer Stein Manufactured From The Finest Stoneware Factory, Thewalt, Combined With The Musical Finery of Reuge Swiss Movement. A Dream To Own.
