The third of four EXCEPTIONAL Antique Vegetable Ivory Acorn Shaped Thimble Holder / Cases I am listing. This is your lucky day! This beauty is 2 1/4" tall and about 1 3/8" at its widest point, with absolutely lovely light caramel colouring. At the top we start with a perfect little apex nipple. Often times if t was any damage to these it was to the end divit, and you can see it is perfect. Surrounding the top point t are several circular carvings in perfect condition. Next we have nice criss cross carvings reminiscent of pine cones simulating an actual acorn top that decend to the rim of the top piece, which unscrews well from the bottom piece. The bottom piece is the well which holds the thimble, the threads w the top screws in are excellent and perfect. The bottom piece is a chubby rounded acorn bottom ending in a perfect little bottom divit, a raised angular nipple, intact and undamaged. T is some very attractive natural freckling of the vegetable ivory material on the bottom acorn piece, giving this piece some real charm and character. These were very popular during the 19th century and this acorn thimble holder dates to approx. 1890.
Vegetable ivory was used in carving many sewing implements of the late 19th century. Vegetable ivory is comprised of the Coquilla nut or the Corozo nut, both South American nuts. The nuts were carefully dried and then hand carved by expert craftsmen and women. Nevertheless, as an alternative to ivory, these beauties were more delicate and few survived intact these 125+ years after they were popularized. A fine addition to your collection.
