This superb oil on canvas landscape is by Thomas Bigelow Craig (American, 1849-1924), a successful landscape painter whose work is held by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Newark Museum, among others. Craig is a largely self-taught artist who may have studied at PAFA. He did exhibit at PAFA 1876-1891, the National Academy of Design 1879-1891, the Brooklyn Artist Association 1881-1885, and Boston Art Club 1884-1903. Craig is best known for summer landscapes with cows grazing or wading through a stream. However, on the back of this canvas is written "Early Autumn" and the horses shown here, rather than cows, are rare subject matter for this artist. Dimensions are 24 x 36 inches, canvas size, and 30 x 42 inches framed. The painting is in excellent condition and has been blacklighted. It is signed and dated lower right 1885. Craig is listed in "Who Was Who in American Art.
