Offered is an early decorated salt glazed stoneware jug potted in early New York City by Thomas Commeraw. The jug stands just under 12" and bears one of the signature marks of Thomas Commeraw which is Corlears Hook. T is also the trademark impressed clamshell designs that Commeraw is so noted for. Corlears hook was the location of the kiln in Manhattan. Commeraw manufactured stoneware from 1797 to 1819. The jug has nice form with a well defined reeded neck. T is cobalt highlighting the impressed design and at the handle terminations. The handle is original and nicely tooled. T is an old cork in the spout (how old I am not sure). The jug is absolutely free of repairs and restoration. T are some tight circular hairlines as seen in the photos on the left side. T is slight wear to the base and a small flake. (Normally the early pieces are pretty worn around the bases). The jug is solid and stable. The glaze has a mottled effect to it which gives it a warm look. Thomas Commeraw was one of three prominent potters working in early Manhattan and his work still speaks for itself 200 years later. This jug is being sold without a reserve and has a modest opening bid. Bid with confidence..... I have over 200 positive feedbacks and stand behind my auctions 100%. Personal checks and money orders are accepted as payment. Personal checks will need to clear before the jug is shipped. Although I do accept I personally double box stoneware and pack it well.
