The plate was published by Thornton as part of the 1812 Lottery edition. Temple of Flora , both the folio and Lottery editions, are considered to be one of the most extraordinary botanical works. Thornton employed several leading artists and engravers to create the work including Sir William Beechey, James Opie, Henry Raeburn, John Russell, Sydenham Edwards, Philip Reinagle, Franceco Bartolozzi, Richard Earlom, and John Landseer. The publishing of the folio edition of this work bankrupted Dr. Thornton, and thus led him to creating the Great Botanical Lottery and the plates from the edition seen The Lottery was unfortunately not a success and Thornton could not continue further publication of the work. Though the work did not have financial success in its time, it remains one of the greatest botanical works ever published. Each plate was created using several printing processes including mezzotint, aquatint, engraving, etching, and stipple. The plates were printed in color and then finished by hand at the time of printing. Guarantee: This print is an original antique print and not a modern reproduction.
