ELEGANT PLATE, THREE CENTURIES OF PRECIOUS METALS IN NEW YORK CITY, Deborah Dependahl Waters, catalogue entries and editor, essays by various authors. 2000, two volumes in cloth slipcase. Special note: The title of these books does not refer to plated silver. It is a term that was used in olden times to refer to solid silver. Most of you know this, but, it needed to be mentioned. A major undertaking in the scholarship on early American silver. The two catalogues span the 17th century well into the 20th century. Some of the finest and earliest colonial silver was crafted in New York City by its' highly regarded silversmiths, many of Dutch extraction. The 18th century is well represented in these books as well by the many excellent craftsmen from that era. The firm of Tiffany and others of the late 19th and 20th centuries are also shown and discussed. In addition to the catalogue t are various essays on American silver by noted authors. T are 434 individual objects catalogued and illustrated. We can only show a fraction in this listing. Makers' touchmarks are shown in photographs. T are lengthy biographies on each silversmith, partnership or firm. This lists their working dates, type of products, locations, family information, training ,etc. The entries are comprehensive with weight, dimensions, stylistic details, provenance and engraving or inscriptions. The photography is superb on high quality paper. Extensive index of owners, presenters and selected events. Seperate index of silversmiths and firms. The hardcoverbooks are in close to new, unused condition. Bindings are completely tight with a clean sturdy slipcase. 621 total pages. The 434 objects photographed in black and white. Small section in color of the most important pieces. Unobtrusive small bookplates inside each cover with owner's name blank. Color pictures grace the covers of each volume. Books measure 8-3/4" by 11-1/4". The two volume set is substantial and quite heavy, hence, our slightly higher shipping costs this time. A very fine reference for the serious collector, enthusiast or dealer in early American silver. Please check our other listings.
