American, ca 1880-1890, oil on canvas. A detailed portrayal of the three-masted schooner W.E.& W.L. Tuck under full sail off the New England coast, flying the Stars and Stripes and the U.S. Naval Jack. Signed lower left W.P. Stubbs. In what appears to be the original pine frame; 22` x 36` (sight), 28` x 42` (w/frame). William Pierce Stubbs (1842-1909), the son of a shipmaster, was born in Orrington, Maine, and served as master of his father`s ship from 1863-1873. He started painting ship portraits in the early 1870s and was listed as a marine painter in the Boston city directory by 1876, painting primarily straightforward broadside views of his subjects.
