lot of 15: the first group includes three letters, on the same red and blue bordered folded letter sheets, all headed Camp Davis, dates of March 29, July 20 and August 19, 1864, and written to his brother. First is 4 pages, begins by warning him not to go to soldiering giving in quite graphic detail the hardships he is experiencing, from weather, dangers of picket duty, ending up in Guard House over minor infractions, grull that a dog would not eat and much more; second is 6 page letter continuing along the same vein with descriptions of army life, such as I have not shaved in 3 months and as black as a crow; and last 2 page letter changes his tone a little and talks of the great food and going to St. Louis to buy bogus jewelry on purpose to trade to the natives; The second group includes four letters with covers to Mrs. Jane McClelland and Wm McClelland of Xenia, Ohio; one is dated Piedmont Hampshire Co. Virginia, May 26th 64 from William writing to his wife Jane about his bed and board, war news, and includes such as there is still traines (sic) of soldiers going through heare (sic) nearly every day and some times 5 or 6 regaments (sic) a day the hundred and thirty ninth Ohio went through today...; another letter to Jane talks of being discharged shortly, but is undated, the third also undated without location but talks of Ohio units being discharge, such as the 34th and 12th. War news such as there was eight to ten rebel prisoners went through heare (sic) yesterday Old Curnal (sic) Mcdonnel that commanded a squad of rebs and came in to this place and burnt a railrode (sic) bridge that crosed (sic) the potomac was one of them, the last in this group is written to a Miss Margaret Watt of Xenia, dated June 23, 1864, but written to William from a Thomas C. Coursey, with much about his imprisonment in a rebel jail. The final group of letters includes two letters and six patriotic covers, both soldier`s letters talk of his illness and hospitalization, Fortress Monroe, September 26, 1862 and unnamed location September 6, 1864.
