Description composed by world renowned Asian expert & appraiser, Mr. Anthony Lee. His bio is below. Tibet, early 1800's. Tibet Lama Vajrayana Tantra Bon-po Buddhist Buddha Dharma Thanka Thangka Mandala. Ink and tempera on cloth thangka of Bonpo form, but Buddhist related based on a central dharmacakra mandala in the body of a demon aflame, the central roundel of his chest showing the Daoist eight trigrams enclosing a nine part colour wheel - magic squares, surrounded by a ring of 12 animal zodiac. The space above commanded by Amida Buddha flanked by Manjusri (Boddhisattva of wisdom) and possibly Vajrapani or Mahakala. The upper right corner with a further nine square magic mandala and the left corner with a composite for of the sacred six syllables - Om Mani Padme Hum (Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus. The sides with lanca and sacred diagrams of unknown meaning, possibly Bonpo (folk shaman tradition in Tibet) in nature. The lower field with two further roundels of colours and lotus form, and a lower explanation in Tibetan script. The left upper third shows how brilliant the colours must have been originally, but the rest of the mandala reveals the ravages of water and use and fading. It measures approx. 9" x 12 3/4". For those not familiar with Anthony Lee here is his bio: Anthony M. Lee is an institutional, market and collection consultant specializing in the arts of China, Japan, Korea, Himalayan Kingdoms, South and Southeast Asia. Starting as a salesperson at age 14 in Chinese antiques in a family business, he went on to university studies in Asian arts, as well as receiving his licenses in tea ceremony, with further studies of ceramics and religious art over eight years in Japan. For several years he was an associate dealer with Sotheby's online site and consultant with various auction houses and museums. Anthony has acted as consultant to over 20 museums, government agencies and trusts including the largest museums in Canada and the US, as well as major collectors, dealers, insurance and transportation companies worldwide. He is considered by many to be one of the foremost experts in the world in Asian Art & Artifacts. Anthony Lee started a website ages ago called Asianart. It is a place to post photos of your items and have experts identify them for you. (You can still post things there and folks will help you.)
