Tiffany Art Glass, Miniature Urn, Favrile Blue Iridescent Context Louis Confort Tiffany (1848-1933), son of jewelry-maker Charles, was the most important exponent of Art Nouveau design in the United States of America. He is best remembered for his unique glass designs. Tiffany initially trained as a painter, later studied glass under Andrea Baldini, a Venetian glass blower. In 1878 he formed Louis Confort Tiffany & Associated Artists. Tiffany experimented with different glass making techniques and in 1880 patented his own type of iridescent glass known as "Favrile" (meaning handcrafted). A true perfectionest, Tiffany finally put his earliest examples of freeblown glass on sale in 1892; he would continue this line until 1928. It is difficult to categorize these pieces because they were produced in hundreds of forms and thousands of color combinations. The majority of the important pieces (like this example) were vases, ranging from flower forms, goose-necks, miniatures and even floor vases.
