This is an important museum-worthy, monumental, beautiful, antique sterling silver soup tureen made for Tiffany & Co by William Gale and Sons in 1856 during the period when the silver they sold in the store was being made by other silversmiths like John C. Moore (he had his own company prior to joining Tiffany& Co), Henry Hebbard, Wood & Hughs. This piece is in a classical design and combines Greek borders with beadings. Several pieces in the same pattern were ordered by Tiffany & Co. and were made by Moore for Tiffany from 1855-1857. In 1855 an exact same piece but in the size of a sauce tureen was made by Moore for Tiffany in 1855. This design is featured on page 15 of the book, Tiffany Silver book by John H. Carpenter, Jr. and Mary Grace Carpenter. See picture below of the tureen but in sauce size.) See the other pictures below of a entrée dish also made by Moore for Tiffany in 1855-1857 in the exact same pattern (See page14 of Tiffany Silver book). The dimensions of the tureen are as follows: Weight - 83 oz. The piece has a few surface scratches and some pinpoints pricks but is in excellent condition especially when you consider that it is 150 years old. The patina is intact. The piece is engraved with a coat of arms depicting a beveled shield with a demi-lion rampant holding a fleur de lis. The fleur de lis is the floral badge of France and represents the sixth son as a mark of difference. The item will be shipped from Phoenix, Arizona .
