is a rare find, this is one of a matched pair of Tiffany Lap Over Edge salad serving pieces, they came togther but I have decided to list them separately (please see my other auctions for the salad serving spoon). A large and very hard to find TIFFANY sterling silver Lap Over Edge salad serving fork with applied turtles , C1880. The salad serving fork is finely hand hammered on the back and the front on the handle. The bowl of the fork is partially hand hammered. The handle has two applied turtles which have been gold washed so they stand out. They appear to be swimming in the water through some reeds. The reverse of the handle also has water and reed decoration. The shaped bowl has also been gold washed and terminates in three large prongs. The fork is marked on the back with 1383 M TIFFANY & CO STERLING PAT 18??. The length of the salad serving fork is just under 10 1/2 inches long. The condition is excellent with no repairs or damage whatsoever with only some light scratching on the bowl of the fork. The water and reeds decoration and the hammering is very crisp, and you can see the pattern on the larger turtle's shell, the smaller turtle lacks detail but I think it was made this way.(see pics)T is some slight wear to the gold wash on the large turtle and more wear to the gold wash on the small turtle and wear to the gold wash on the front and back of the bowl of the fork. A similar fish serving fork can be found on page 223 of the Tiffany Silver Flatware book by William P Hood Jr. A very pretty and hard to find large salad serving fork in the Tiffany Lap Over Edge (applied) pattern.
