The "RAMBLER ROSE" ETCH/GOLD ENCRUSTATION decoration was applied to various pieces of glassware by TIFFIN GLASSMASTERS from the 1920's-1970's. A word regarding the Rambler Rose etch with gold or platinum band. At one time, it was thought that once this etch was spotted on a piece of glassware, that the item had to have been manufactured by TIFFIN GLASSMASTERS in Ohio. However, with new information being published, t is no doubt that three West Virginia Glass Companies( WHEELING DECORATING, MORGANTOWN GLASS & DUNBAR GLASS) and LOTUS/GLASTONBURY DECORATING of Ohio, also produced a variation of this etch/decoration, and, also called their version "RAMBLER ROSE". The important point about the WHEELING & LOTUS Rambler Rose variants, is that they did not manufacture their own glass but, puchased blanks from various glassmakers, and, as such, their versions could appear on glassware made by many other elegant glassware makers, in addition to Tiffin, Morgantown & Dunbar(which all manufactured their own glass and applied their own Rambler Rose etch/gold overlay version of this etch/gold overlay to their glass). It appears that most of the blanks that WHEELING & LOTUS used came from: DUNCAN&MILLER, CAMBRIDGE, FOSTORIA, IMPERIAL GLASS, NEW MARTINSVILLE, CENTRAL GLASS, HEISEY, FOSTORIA, LANCASTER/STANDARD, MORGANTOWN, TIFFIN & PADEN CITY. So, if a Rambler Rose etch/decoration is identified as the Wheeling or Lotus version, then the next job would be to identify the maker of the glass, if this is possible. In the case w the Rambler Rose etch/decoration is a version from TIFFIN, then it is believed it can only appear on their own glassware and not on glass made by other glassware makers(however, t is one recorded instance of a Tiffin Deerwood etch appearing on a piece of Heisey signed glass). In the case of Morgantown and Dunbar Rambler Rose variants, things even get more complex, in that these makers not only applied their Rambler Rose decorations to their own wares but, they also purchased blanks from other makers(this was the case w they didn't want to spend the years required to make moulds for certain items, such as plates or goblets/tumblers). Note that SNYDER'S Morgantown book pictures plates made by New Martinsville. In this auction, we offer the 4" high by 7" wide at the mouth OPTIC PANELLED FOOTED COMPORT in the STUNNING REFLEX GREEN and RAMBLER ROSE ETCH/GOLD ENCRUSTATION. This item is in SUPERB CONDITION without any cracks, chips, nicks or stains, and, appears to have been NEVER USED; GOLD IS ALMOST 100% INTACT - jut a teeny bit of age wear to a couple tiny spots on the outside edge of the top rim. We identified Tiffin's Rambler Rose by checking the fruit that appears at the tip of each fork of the vertical branch and the diagonal lines protruding from between the top horizontal branch and the vertical forked branch: the Tiffin version, as defined by the books referenced below, has a rounded fruit at the tips and, the stems curve outward - while the protruding diagonal lines do not end in a "club head". REF: GOSHE, HEMMINGER & PINA'S Depression Era Stems & Tableware(1998) - Tiffin Rambler Rose is shown on pg. 13; PAGE/FREDERIKSEN'S Tiffin is Forever(1994), Rambler Rose decoration is depicted on pp. 36-37; HEMMINGER & PINA'S 40's, 50'ds& 60's Stemware by Tiffin(1999), the Tiffin Rambler Rose decoration is pictured on pp. 3& 12; FLORENCE'S Pattern ID Guide Vol II(1998) a Tiffin tumbler with a Tiffin Rambler Rose decoration is shown on pg. 148. As we get on in years, we have ceased our stamp collecting activities, and now, we will be liquidating over 300 pieces of antique glassware that we have accumulated over the past five years. Even more of an inititive is the fact that our Bride of 40 years has indicated that I need to stop my compulsive buying of glassware and sell the stuff that fills up my garage and another room, if I want to make it to 41 years.
