Edges of spines have small scuffs from shelf use. For those enthusiasts who are familiar with this massive two-volume boxed set of sports car racing history from 1953 through 1998, t probably is no need for a description , except to state that it is extremely rare to find a copy for sale anyw on the internet, and I could not locate another copy at this time. This set is offered from my late husbandâe(tm)s treasured library. Last year, I believe, I did find one copy for sale in the $750 price range. For those not familiar with this history of sports car racing, this fantastic productionâe(tm)s subtitle is âeoeFive Decades of Long Distance Racing, The World Sports Car, Grand Touring, and Manufacturers Championships.âe In Foreword I, Phil Hill wrote, âeoe János Wimpffenâe(tm)s amazing set of books on the sports car championship should come with a warning label: Do Not Open These Books Unless You Have Some Spare Time. Begin to read as little as one page, glimpse just one photo and youâe(tm)ll be hooked. Pour yourself some coffee, brew a cuppa tea, or maybe uncork a bottle of wine and curl into your favorite chair. You wonâe(tm)t be going anyw for a while. âe¦ The pair of books is something quite special as well. Not only are they well written and entertaining, but just the detailed charts of statisticsâe"great for filling in little details in the memory bankâe"are worth the price. The photos, many of them by old friend Bernard Cahier, only add to the booksâe(tm) appeal.âe In Foreword II, Brian Redman writes, âeoeThe word âe~monumentalâe(tm) should be used with care. However, J ános Wimpffen has produced, after a great deal of research and hard work, a truly monumental production of two volumes covering sports-car racing from 1953 through 1998. ... It will give many hours of pleasurable reading to all racing enthusiasts and will be sought after for years to come as a valuable source of reference.âe In Foreword III, Derek Bell says, in part, âeoeâe¦ the book you are about to embark upon is an outstanding compilation of the complete history of sports car racing. J ános Wimpffen has put an immense amount of effort and research into producing such a unique record of motor sport. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.âe The Authorâe(tm)s Preface concludes with âeoeI do not have the concision and panache, let alone the lifetime of experience that a Phil Hill can impart upon the enthusiasts of motor racing. But hopefully within these many pages the reader will find themselves in spirit. The purpose of history is not just a telling of what went before, but it is also a guidebook that helps everyone involved with motor racing better understand how they fit into a much bigger picture. It matters not whether one is an executive of an automotive manufacturer, a professional race driver, the person who fits tires at a pit stop, a marshal holding a flag, a spectator, a car designer, a journalist, or someone who once thought it a frolic to drive a few laps in a race, this book is for you to better appreciate your roleâe"how it has changed and how it has remained constant over the past 45 years. Yes, history is important. We all live, make, and change it.âe The Introduction explains that the book is divided into three distinct parts: Foundations, Narratives, and Superlatives. âeoeThe book has been carefully designed so that it can be read either from cover-to-cover, or be used as a reference book for extracting specific information. âe¦ This is a chronicle of a set of races which were often spectacular, sometimes mundane, had their share of comedy, drama, and tragedy, and represent some of the most interesting technical devel...
