Brothers of the Baladi ~ A Time of Peace CD Christmas Songs ... Middle Eastern Instruments

The world has embraced Celtic, Latin and other hybrid music genres. Now a new fusion of Middle Eastern music is available.
Led by founder/drummer/percussionist Michael Beach, Brothers of the Baladi present 15 Christmas songs from various European sources played on the Kanoon, a 76 stringed zither-like instrument - as well as the Arabic Oud, Turkish Ney [flute], Bouzouk, the double reeded Mizmar and acoustic fretless Bass. Each carol rides to the rhythms of the Middle East [with traditonal drums doumbek/darbuka, def, riq & tabl beledi] as never heard before. The melodies find natural counterpoints and turns in the interpretations that each player adds and each instrument demands.
Ishmael, a master of the Kanoon, creates beautifully complex runs on We Three Kings, while the haunting ney/flute of Steve Flynn on Silent Night evokes the vast desert horizons. The oud solo by Stephen Skaggs pays honor to the instrument's descendent, the English lute, on A Coventry Carol.
If a cold desert night were bathed by the light of the Crescent Moon and the Wiseman's Star; if the sounds of string, flute and drum silenced the anxious cries of battle; it would be a night when warriors of different faiths would share the melodies of their homelands and of Holy Days long ago. It would be a Night of Harmony and A Time of Peace.
