Sell all your items in every auction with Andale Gallery The Past And Present In Store DESCRIPTION Sixth-Plate Tintype - Woman's Portrait - Scovill Mfg Ornate Metal Matting Circa Late 1800s ◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦◦ This is 1/6th Plate Tintype Photo portrait of a well-dressed woman. The photo is Black and White with gold hand-embellishing on the earrings and brooch. The Tintype is framed by an ornate gold colored gilded metal matting that is attached to the photo at the corners. The top of the matting w it folds over to the back of the photo bears the inscription: "Scovill Mfg Co - Superior". The bottom of the matting w it folds over to the back of the photo bears the inscription: "Waterbury Conn No. 925 (?)". The photo and matting are in great condition. The matting has a couple of dark wear spots in the upper right-hand corner. The 1/6th plate photo measures 2-3/4" x 3-1/4". The matting is of the same general dimensions. Ambrotypes are photographs on glass so they do not have that "shiny mirror" reflection (but, being on glass they are somewhat reflective). If you take an ambrotype out of a case and hold it up to the light you can usually see through the picture (since it's on glass). They are different from Daguerreotypes and Tintypes.
