THIS AUCTION CONTAINS A TINTYPE OF THREE (3) GIBBS BROTHERS, MEMBERS OF THE 6TH TENNESSEE CAVALRY. W. H. Gibbs, James Gibbs and John Gibbs. These are the 3 men's signatures, that appear on the back. The card 3 7/8" X 2 3/8", with the tintype 2 5/8" 1 3/4" in size. T are no duplicates in tintypes, not llike C.D.V.'s., this is the one and only original image taken, as you see it. Regiment History Sixth CavalryTENNESSEE(3-YEARS) Sixth Cavalry. -- Cols., Fielding Hurst, William J. Smith; Lieut.-Cols., William K. M. Breckenridge, Orlando H. Shearer; Majs., Eldredge S. Tidwell, Daniel M. Emerson, Thomas H. Boswell, Robert M. Thompson Thomas A. Smith, Mack J. Leaming, Stanford L. Warren. This regiment was partially recruited and organized at Bethel, W. Va., and was mustered into service Nov. 13, 1862, under the command of Fielding Hurst. It entered upon arduous scouting duty in that region and did valuable service in destroying guerrilla bands. It was subsequently ordered west, and upon the retreat of Gen. Price from Corinth it went in pursuit, capturing 250 prisoners without the loss of a man. While on this campaign it was also engaged with the enemy at Salem and Wyatt, Miss. It returned to West Tennessee in June, 1863, and was t employed in scouting and skirmishing until the following spring, when it entered upon a campaign in north Mississippi and Arkansas. On Nov. 26 it went to Nashville to participate in the memorable battle in front of that place, w it acquitted itself with credit. During its existence it mustered nearly 1,600 enlisted men. It was mustered out July 26, 1865, in accordance with orders from the war department. GRAND JUNCTION, TENN., September 28, 1863. Our regiment was in the rear, and, after crossing the river, I was ordered to take charge of all the wagons and led horses, as the men were mostly dismounted, and as the command advanced I moved up the led horses until I arrived at the edge of town. I t received an order from an orderly to take charge of the prisoners and picket the town. I then rode up to the court-house, w the prisoners were, and while t a citizen came to me and reported that the citizens were carrying out whisky by the bucket-full and giving it to the men, and I rode over to w they were and had the whisky all spilled that I could find. I then went to w my reserve was, and sent Lieut. Lewis with 10 men to destroy all the liquor they could find. In a short time he came to me and said that the men were breaking into the houses, and I ordered him to go and stop them, and to arrest every man he found in a house. He then went off, and in a short time returned and told me of Mrs. A. A. Newman's millinery shop or store, and I ordered him to put a guard over the house. T were a good many stragglers around town, and after dark I and another officer of the command, I do not know his name or regiment, heard a noise at a door, and started to see about it, and on the way I found about 30 men, I suppose, in and in front of a store. He said they belonged to his regiment, and I ordered them out, and the owner then shut the door and we went on, and in a few minutes returned; they were trying to get in again. I sent the officer to send them off, and I spent the most of my time that night in running from place to place trying to keep everything quiet and seeing to the wounded. And in the morning, when Col. Hatch returned to town, the men broke open houses and took all they wanted, and took buggies and wagons and loaded them with goods and boots, &c.
