This ring is a token of love dating from the Victorian era. People were smaller then and this is a tiny ring that fits my small hand only on the fifth finger. It is probably no more than a size five. It depicts the highly detailed head of a roaring lion, the design on the sides showing the lion's curling mane. The eyes are teeny gleaming emeralds and in the mouth is a prong set diamond. I am not a jeweler, and I cannot tell you the karat weight of this stone. Please check the photo of the ring on my finger to get some idea of the size. I am pricing this ring based on what I paid for it at an estate sale in Humboldt County, CA about 15 years ago. Inside, behind the lion head, is the touching inscription: "Signus Amoris" (which means "Sign of my Love" in Latin) N to L Inside the band one can just see the remnants of other markings, the only clear thing being XXX, but whether this was part of a date in Roman numerals or had some other meaning I cannot say. This ring never failed to be noticed when I wore it, and brought me many compliments over the years. Please e-mail me with any questions you might have . UPDATE: I took the ring to a jeweler today to get some idea of the karat weight of the diamond. "Ring is 14K gold old setting. Diamond is a quality, clear, well cut 1/4 karat". And the informal appraisal was well over my reserve amount. I find I cannot raise the reserve on this auction, so somebody may well get bargin on this ring. I can spell BARGAIN, but I cannot correct my error. In response to another question, the lion's head measures 1/2 inch from top of head to chin.
