TOLKIEN (J. R. R.): The Fellowship of the Ring being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings. Cambridge: The Riverside Press for Houghton Mifflin Company, 1954. Folding map at the end, one side pasted down to inside rear cover; other illustrations, all by the author. 8vo, 423pp with light soiling and minor stain along fore-edges; blue cloth over boards gilt-titled, printed paper dust-jacket (torn and chipped, especially at the spine). NOTE: the photograph of the map looks somewhat browned on both sides but that is because of folds in the paper (i.e. shadows) and lighting, but in actuality it is quite white and clean.
FIRST US EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION, published October 21st 1954 (less than three months after the earliest British printing). The date 1954 is shown clearly on the title page and the copyright page says "First published in the United States 1954. It is one of only 1500 copies published as such, printed in Great Britian by George Allen & Unwin at the Riverside Press in Cambridge, then sent to the US and bound in America. Moreover, this is a REVIEW COPY as it comes to us from the archives of The Horn Book Magazine (Boston) and bears their rubber stamped name on the front free endpaper. It matches exactly with the description given by Wayne Hammond 5b.i in his definitive Tolkien bibliography (1993). The importance and value of this modern classic cannot be overstated.
