The Lord of the Rings: Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , The Return of the King "Silver Anniversary Edition" 1st/1st A very scarce treat for the serious Tolkien collector. Always considered among the most beautiful and scarcely seen of all the primary sets of Tolkien's masterpiece, Houghton Mifflin's "Silver Anniversary Edition" was issued in 1981 in three volumes with slipcase. We were delighted to come across this gorgeous set in a recent bookstore buyout. The faux leather case shows little shelf wear and has done a remarkable job protecting the books; the very tight volumes appear hardly to have been opened. NO tears, signatures, ink, foxing, stains...etc. Each volume's very glossy and textured silver 'leather' hardback cover with high gloss crimson Tolkien insignia and spine outlines are near mint. Blood red speckled design on the edges of the papers. Treasure for the serious Tolkien collector. Hard covers .... 8vo - over 7.35" x 9.75" tall....a substantial and heavy set. This special edition had only a small printing and thus now is scarce. There was NO equivalent UK edition and so they are a uniquely "American treasure" of Tolkin's epic.
