Tom Clark sculpted his first gnome in 1978. From that time, he has produced an array of charming "Woodspirits". However, his talents are not limited to gnomes and elves. His characters all have lovingly detailed, expressive faces . Their expressions are gentle and often joyful. In addition to the figures, each piece has related details that add to the character. This one, "Uncle Whit" is an elderly man dressed in denim overalls and a longsleeved shirt. He is seated on a cane-bottomed ladder back chair with his legs crossed. On his knee is his current piece of carving. With his head cocked to the side, he is talking to someone who is apparently standing to his right. On the floor on the right side of the chair, is a wooden nail firkin with a pair of pliers and shears on the lid. A hammer is on the floor in front of it. Shavings are under his boots and on the left side of the chair are a wooden car and horse--probably some of his earlier projects. Tom Clark's signature is incised under the wooden horse along with the number 17 in a circle. Mr. Clark's signature also appears on the side of the firkin. The sale of this piece benefits our local Hospice. They have a booth here in our mall where they put in the nicer things that are donated to them.
