Beautiful Condition. Years of production for these type vehicles were 1959-1967. Book Value 2004: $30.00/$35.00/$40.00 Values are always based on condition, as a guide the reference used for Tootsietoys uses the following: 90%-Fine, having only small paint chips and at least 90% of the original paint on the body. 95%-Slight wear on the tires and the high points on the body. This toy should have at least 95% of the original paint. 100%-No imperfections or chips and having 100% of the original paint. HISTORY: Strombecker is the oldest toy company in the United States, dating back to 1876. The Dowst Brothers Company was started to publish the National Laundry Journal. They made the collar button and several different laundry accessories. He recognized the possibility of making molds to cast the collar button from lead or similar type metal. The start of the die-cast industry was born thanks to his success with making molds for the collar button. The evolution toward Tootsietoys products continued to prosper rapidly. Many miniatures were made for various industries-miniature flat irons, shoes, skillets, plus many more. These trinkets were gathered together and sold to the candy industry as prize items to be put in their penny packages. This great effort by Dowst was the start of a strong die-cast process. The year 1914 saw the first succissful toy production: Henry Ford's Model T. Around 50 million attratively packaged Tootsietoy Model T's were produced. Tootsietoy is a name that has continued to dominate the die-cast toy industry with its many attractive packaged toys and their excellent realism. The Tootsietoy name applied to only some of their die-cast products. It wasn't until after a Dowst brother had a granddaughter name Toots, they decided to name the doll furniture toys after her. The trade liked the name so well it was adopted for all of the company's die-cast toys. The Cosmo Manufacturing Company was etablished by Nathan Shure in 1892, to make small novelties for Cracker Jack and other candy firms-a similar business to the Dowst Brothers Company. In 1926, the two die-cast giants merged, calling their new company, Dowst Manufacturing Company. They produced many replicas of the various GM models, Fords, and other popular cars on the road at that time. Tootsietoy was seeing a great need to appeal to the youngsters and besides its realistic brightly painted cars, decided to add doll furniture, train sets, farm sets, and airplanes of that era to its line. The children who played with Tootsietoy products not only grew up, but passed their entusiasm to not only their children but their children's children. The large demand for all the various Tootsietoy products grew so rapidly that a new modern plant was constructed to meet the demand for their attractive and varied items. In 1961, Shure's descendents purchased Strombeck-Becker, makers of electrically powered plastic cars. Henceforth, the company adopted the Strombecker name and is still called Strombecker Corporation today. Toy collecting today is a very popular hobby, enjoyed by many serious collectors of all age groups. Tootsietoy vehicles are among the most sought after and are quite valuable to collectors today.
