This is a beautiful factory/desk model of Vought's V-1000 Export Fighter in 1/48 scale. This model is solid ABS plastic from the Topping molds. I received this model from the Vought factory when I visited them in 1975. It has remained in airconditioned, non-smoking quarters since that time.Yes, it looks like an F-8 Crusader but it isn't. It really is a V-1000 and the stand is inscribed as such. 's the story: The US Government's International Fighter Aircraft Competition was structured to replace the F-5A, which was still in full production. On 20 November 1970, the F-5E was officially selected over the Lockheed CL-1200 Lancer (derived from the F-104), the Ling-Temco-Vought V-1000 (derived from the F-8), and a stripped-down version of the McDonnell Douglas F-4. When I picked ths model up in 1975, Vought must have had a few laying around from their ill-fated proposal. I was an Air Force pilot and was an "Air Force" airplane so I picked it up. Obviously, this is an extremely rare desk model as few (models) were built and the program, for Vought, was a failure. The model is in pristine condition and will make an impressive addition to your collection. It is also a great conversation piece.
