Toshi Yoshida Sokol Estate Modernist Japanese Print
This is a superb Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995) piece from the estate of Herman Sokol (former president of the Bristol-Myers Company) & Margaret McCormack Sokol. Entitled "Beginning of the Year" , this is a pencil signed, first edition print, not one of the late-life or posthumous re-issues. The print is titled, numbered and dated in pencil by the artist in the bottom margin, with the title in English, numbered 15 of an edition of 50, and dated 1962. The print is approx. 16" x 10¾" (41 x 27cm). This is a fine example of Toshi Yoshida's contemporary abstract, conceptual work. The print is in superb condition, with fine, saturated color, and with no evident toning. It is laid down on what appears to be acid-free matboard. There is a pencil notation in the upper left corner. I have other Yoshida family pieces that I am auctioning now (including other Toshi Yoshida abstract prints, a Hodaka Yoshida, and a Hiroshi Yoshida), and I have several others that I intend to auction in the near future. I will not belabor Toshi Yoshida's biography, as it is well documented both in print and on the web. See, for example, his listing on or the extensive treatment in A Japanese Legacy: Four Generations of Yoshida Family Artists . Suffice to say, Toshi was a towering figure in 20th century Japanese art. P ayment and Shipping: I'm also currently selling on eBay other Toshi Yoshida abstracts and other Japanese prints, as well as Inuit pieces .
