This early type coin, in our opinion, is in EXTRA FINE PLUS condition with incredible details, a hint of natural toning on both sides, and overall outstanding eye appeal. Capped Bust Half Dollars with lettered edges have undeniable charm, much like the copper coinage of early America. They were struck with screw presses, and each working die was prepared individually, the date, stars and lettering punched in by hand. Capped Bust Silver Half Dollar with the lettered edge were minted between 1807 and 1836. The coin was designed by German-born John Reich, handpicked by Mint director Robert Patterson who maintained that "the beauty of our coins would be greatly improved by [Reich's] masterly hand."
