By Ainsworth, William Harrison. Published by London: George Routledge And Sons, 1853. Subtitled: " A Historical Romance ." One of Ainsworth's finest works, it takes place in 16th C. England and tells the story of Queen Mary. Illustrated with 40 incredible full-page steel etchings and 58 woodcuts by George Cruikshank, the genius of 19th century literary illustrations. Condition: Good+ original blind-stamped blue covers; elaborate gilt decorations and title; some wear along edges of spine; very few spots of foxing (mostly to first several pages); pages clean; small signature to title page; piece missing from corner of first free page; front hinge slightly weak.
