Cabinet Card of town under construction. On the back it is marked in pencil "Marietta Okla". Also below in pen is "....sta or sra Okla". The actual photograph is 7 7/16" x 4 7/16'. Including border it is 8 1/2" x 5 1/4". It shows a town with several plank buildings and a church. On the far left are two horses. Then t is a small building with a saltbox addition with lots of buggies and horses in front. Beside the building is a grinding wheel. Just to its right is another plank building with several windows and chimney. In the middle perhaps a "strret" are several wagons and at least two drivers. In the right background is a wooden church with chimney and steeple. A wagon sits to the side. On the right is a much larger building with several men standing and sitting out front. A covered wagon/carriage sits to the side. Photographers? Has no markings. Grass grows in the foreground which also includes some water like a small stream. T are NO trees! So the area looks to be High or Red Bed Plains. Marietta was founded in 1887 in the Indian Territory or Chicksaw Nation. Today it is in extreme south central Oklahoma the county seat of Love County located not far from the Red River. I have talked to and showed the picture to people who have lived/live in the area and no one recognizes it. Marietta was a railroad town and t is no sign of it. read more
