Rare and Fascinating Trajan Imitative Denarius I picked this imitative Trajan (98-117 AD) denarius up from a seller in the UK and it is a strange one. This coin has been examined by Curtis Clay of Harlan Berk Ltd. in Chicago, one of the leading ancient coin experts in the U.S. After studying the coin he believes it is an ancient imitative, perhaps a fouree, or an ancient copy made with a low grade silver core and covered in silver sheets. While it has some pits on the obverse, the coin shows no copper core. Initially Mr. Clay thought it was a silver coin. The lines on the reverse may be the edges of the silver sheets used to coat the coin. What makes this coin so interesting is that it is made using the design from a die of a gold aureus. This bust type; laureate draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, was never used on silver denarii, but was used for gold aurei. The ancient counterfeiters used a mold or die made from a gold coin and matched it with the reverse of a silver denarius! It is an interesting coin and should be of great interest to the Trajan specialist or someone who wants to own a rare ancient imitative denarius. I would be happy to send copies of Curtis Clay's emails about this coin to its new owner. (Diameter - 19 mm. Weight - 2.77 grams) OB: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust, seen from behind - IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P REV: Pax standing left, holding cornucopiae, lighting afire a pile of arms - COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC PAX in exergue. This obverse bust was used on several gold aurei. The reverse is modeled off the denarius reverse found as Roman Silver Coins, Vol. II, #196. A wonderful ancient imitative coin!
