TRAMP ART Frame CROWN OF THORNS 2 Layers – Very Good Condition! DIMENSIONS: 16 ½” L x 14 ½” W x 3” D, INSIDE FRAME is 6 ¾“ x 6 ¾” (Pictures show: Front, Back, Top and Side views) LOW STARTING BID & NO RESERVE! Tramp Art was popular from the late 1800's to the early 1900's (usually not after the 30's). "Crown of Thorns" is a unique American form of Tramp Art created by whittling wood (usually cigar boxes were used) by hand into individual puzzle pieces that are notched to intersect at right angles to form joints, or a knot. The joints fit together and become self-supporting (glue is not normally used). The “Crown of Thorns” construction method gives a 'prickly' as well as a transparent quality. Named after the 'Crown of Thorns' worn by Jesus on the cross. You can Google "Tramp Art" or "Crown of Thorns" to access museum web sites that can give you more background on this wonderful American art form. I am guessing this "Crown of Thorns" was made around 1900. I'm not sure as the tramp artists rarely signed or dated their work. You can add your own print or photo. (See above dimensions.) There are only a few missing or chipped 'thorns' on this large "Crown of Thorns" frame (not very noticeable), so it is in very good condition for its age. There is some discoloring at the top which gives this frame the antique look (See Pictures) read more
