Adams and Sons Tunstall, Staffordshire , England c. 1938 This is a delightful child's transferware alphabet or ABC plate to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Nathanial Currier's printshop on Spruce Street in New York City. The shop opened in 1838 and the plate dates to 1938. It is probably a reproduction of an original advertising plate that was made as a marketing giveaway. when the shop first opened its doors. Nathaniel Currier was the predecessor to Currier & Ives, the famous lithographers and popular commercial printers, The plate is transfer printed in black with the entire alphabet surrounding the perimeter, intertwined with vines and a gadrooned edge. The central image is surrounded by a fancy border and reads: ColoredENGRAVINGSfor the PEOPLEpublished byN.
