This is a four inch sheell casing from a Naval Deck gun, which would lead one to believe he was a Member of the Armed Guard on Merchant Ships. The Casing has his rank, "1st Class Gunners Mate" soldered on but with his Rank are coins from around the world w he traveled which would lead one to believe his Armed Guard connection. For thosse npot familiar with the Navy Armed Guard, it was a highly desired appointment. Merchant ships had no weapons because Civilians are not supposed to shoot at the enemy who is attacking them, they didn't have the training and the required skills. When the German Submarines were sinking lots of the merchant ships and vital supplies were not getting to our fighting Troops on the ground, the Navy decided to arm the Merchant Ships and put Navymen specially trained to protect the ships on board the merchant shihps. They were armed with sometimes woefully inadequate Deck guns of 4 inch but the Anti-Aircraft guns were usually capable of doing the job. These Navy men were called Armed Guard and because they were on merchant ships the duty was usually much better as was the chow. A First Class Gunners Mate would be a necessary member of the Crew and while Boatsmans Mates had their weaving, knotting and splicing to take up the time at sea, the Gunners Mate made this Lamp to take up the boring time when not working read more
