is a beautiful, sterling silver Trifari jelly belly brooch with rhinestones. It has a worn vermeil coating and was made circa 1943. I believe that it was designed by Alfred Philippe. This brooch is featured on page 148 of Brunialti's American Costume Jewelry . The brooch is almost two inches from nose to tail and from head to toe. The jelly belly itself is almost one inch in diameter. It is marked "Trifari" with a crown over the "T" on the far back shin, which would be the dog's rear left leg. The words "Pat.Pend." are marked on its rear-end, but I cannot find any corresponding numbers. The word " Sterling " is marked on the dog's nose. The brooch has its original safety clasp and pin, both of which appear incredibly solid. This brooch is not in new condition. T are minor scratches on the jelly belly that are visible under bright light, such as a camera flash. These scratches are visible in the pictures, but I cannot feel them when I rub my finger over the belly. The belly is slightly loose but was most likely loose when it was new. The jelly is in no danger of falling or sliding. It is most likely this way because it is held in with only two prongs, as per its original condition. T are also some rhinestones missing: one on the nostril, five on the ear, five on the tail, four on the belt, nine on the back left (front) leg, two on each of the front legs. These are very difficult to see with the naked eye, especially because the remaining sockets are almost as shiny as the rhinestones. However, the most important rhinestone - the red eye - is intact and shining. The vermeil is also tarnished or worn. I am not sure which is the case. I have not attempted to clean or polish this brooch in any way because I believe that a more serious collector is better skilled to do so. This is an incredibly rare and collectable sterling Trifari jelly belly brooch. Its value will continue to increase with age, and its beauty will continue to shine.
