From Steve Kane Quilts and Folk Art - A READY-FOR-BED EXTRA LARGE!!!!! QUILT "Feedsack Prints" "TRIPLE IRISH CHAIN" with 'NILE GREEN' BORDER and BINDING KING Size: approx. 88 inches by 96 inches. Made in the 1920's. All Cottons, Colorful "Feedsack" Prints. Some random, unnoticeable staining. Some wear on Binding. With Cable, Checkerboard and Circular Fan Quilting. FEEDSACK PRINTS were variously patterned, multi-colored cotton prints that were often used as the packaging for common household goods such as sugar, flour, lentils etc. These prints were also called SHIRTING FABRICS which were used to make shirts, dresses, aprons, curtains etc. A length of fabric could be a bonus with the purchase of the household items referred to above. These were extremely popular in the 1920's and 1930's with quiltmakers who used them in quilt patterns like Wedding Ring, Dresden Plate, Grandma's Garden and various Irish Chains. In "To Kill a Mockingbird" Harper Lee writes of "flour-sack-skirted first grade." This exceptionally large TRIPLE IRISH CHAIN QUILT has a "Nile Green" Border and Binding - a fashionable color of the period which is seeing a resurgence in popularity today. The Second Border of Off-White fabric is cotton and also serves as the Backing. There is expert quilting in several patterns: "Cable," "Checkerboard," and "Circular Fan." There is some minor random staining that is not noticeable. There is some wear on the Bindings. There is a one patch repair just completed on the off-white muslin on front and back. There are no genuine antique quilts which do not show some blemish or sign of age - these characteristics show that you have a real antique quilt and not a China made replica. This TRIPLE IRISH CHAIN is one of the largest quilts I've ever owned. It is too large for me to use or display so it has remained unused since I purchased it from the legendary Mary at the New York Upper West Side Market in the late 70's or early 80's. I was thrilled to be so gifted with the chance to buy this and several other quilts after I had passed her scrutiny and was declared worthy of such prized goods. That's a "WELCOME" TEA TOWEL in the detail photo of the Borders and Binding. THE ANTIQUE AMERICAN QUILT reflects the appeal of the idiosyncratic art and tradition produced by anonymous American women - unsung artisans who created bold, pleasant, expressive designs, who used multiple image before Op Art, bold shapes before Hard Edge and mixed forms before Abstraction. As seamstress and pioneer, homemaker and practioner of the domestic arts, the American woman made thousands of quilts with a magical artistic handiwork which covered beds in households across the American Continent. Made with skill, patience and love these genuine antique American patchwork quilts are as unique to the textile arts of the world as the Paisley Shawl of Kashmir.
