Antique Carved Ivory Necklace
What you can't get when you buy a new piece of jewelry is a past. And that is what I love about antique jewelry - I adore something with a past, a history, perhaps a secret, a mystery which one will never know about. If you are a collector of antique ivory then you will appreciate how very charming this necklace is... I have never seen anything like it. I purchased it from the estate of a local philanthropist several years ago. It is is pristine condition. With the clasp closed (and it is a threaded ivory clasp) it measures 17 ½" in length. Triple strands of hundreds of tiny delicate ivory beads meet an oval ivory bead w they become 6 strands when they loop through the ivory centerpiece. The ivory medallion is carved into a flower. Which kind of flower I have never quite decided upon, possibly a rose, it is exquisite. It measures just under 2 ½" wide and 1 ½" long. Deeply carved with delicate upturned petals and leaves. Gently swayed in the back . It is a creamy ivory with many of the beads aging in colour quite nicely. Although I would like to think this was just an incredibly difficult piece to try to capture the beauty of, I am leaning towards bad photography skills on my part! I have used several different colored backgrounds to try to capture the colour and carving. Please feel free to email me if you need additional pictures. Although I haven't worn it, it has just been one of those pieces that I just haven't been able to part with. It is truly a treasure from the past that deserves to be worn!
