True Copy of the Journal of the High Court of Justice, for the Tryal of K. Charles I. As it was Read in the House of Commons, and Attested under the hand of Phelps, Clerk to that Infamous Court. Taken by J. Nalson, Ll.D. Jan. 4. 1683. London, Printed by H.C. for Thomas Dring, 1684. Hardcover, with boards present but detached, needs to be rebacked or rebound. Contents: crisp, strong pages, clean, no writing or stamps, 1st Edition, Folio, pp. [x], LXX, [viii], 128, [viii]. Three engraved plates: 1. Allegorical Frontispiece (with explanatory leaf); 2. Court-Room Scene (with explanation of the court, with some animadversions, showing the seating arrangements of the trial court); 3. Portrait Frontispiece of King Charles. this followed by a fascinating transcript of the proceedings of the trial, together with speeches made by the king before his death. Bound at rear, “An Alphabetical Catalogue of the Members of the Execrable Pretended High Court of Justice”. List of the 67 commissioners present (p.86) and the 59 regicides (p.110) both printed in red. John Phelps was born in about 1619 in Salisbury, Wilts. In 1648-49, he was called by England's Rump Parliament; to serve as Clerk of the High Court at the trial of King Charles I.
