This listing is for an absolutely brilliant deluxe impression of Tsukioka Kogyo 's woodblock " Ebira ," from " Noh Gaku Hyaku Ban ," published by Daikokuya , between 1922 and 1926. This shozuri print is in superior condition, with clear, strong inks that remain true to their original colors, including both gold mica blind-stamps and silver mica grounds- applied as shiny overlays- that are in a nearly perfect state. (In the photos, the silver mica is so reflective that it might seem to have bled into its accompanying field. This is merely a play of light, as the actual application is extremely clean.) It bears the artist's " Kogyo " signature, as well as his embossed seal, both of which are also neat and clean.
T is almost no damage to speak of- no folds, scratches, scrapes, water stains, or tears- just three wee little spots of foxing, the largest of which can be seen in the close-up, just to the left and center of the actor. T are also two small, clean snips of a conservation tape on the upper corners of the obverse that have been left in place from w it was at one time hinged on a backing for display. All corners are neat and tidy, though, with no dog-ears or bitten nips. One of my favorite aspects to this woodblock is not actually on the artwork, but is found on the obverse, as well. The entire back is a veritable art lesson for any budding printer as to the application of the beran , as its entire path can be lightly traced t T is also a nicely visible bleeding of ink, not through over-application, but it's just enough so that each block of color, too, can be clearly defined. It is simply one of the all-around nicest original woodblocks I could hope to offer. It should be noted that, at one time, a woodblock by Tsukioka Kogyo (1860- 1927) would not have been too highly sought, as his importance to the transition from Meiji to Modern Japanese art had been noted, but not particularly valued. Since the exhibition held at the Frick Art Museum , as well as Kogyo 's inclusion in a position of prominence in the Carnegie Museum of Art 's " Modern Japanese Prints 1868- 1989 ," the question of collectibility- and his work's true value- has been firmly resolved. Of particular interest to the collector would be the following: /programs/exhibitions/detail/80.html As already stated, this edition of " Ebira " is shozuri , and its size is Oban tate-e (10" x 15").
