TT 1901 $10 LEGAL TENDER BISON FR# 120 VF/XF Serial# E16130939, Fr# 120, plate#C99/359. Signatures of Teehee/Burke. Nicely margined Bison, bright bold red ink. The "Bison" note - American History through and through - depicting the truly noble American Buffalo on its front centered between the great explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The bright red seal and Roman number "X" pop off the paper in contrast to the deep black of the bison and surrounding magnificent scrolled engraving done by M. S. Baldwin. The bison, "Pablo", made his home at the Washington Zoo and was originally purchased from Michael Pablo, a Montana rancher in 1897 when the west was still wild. Lewis and Clark traveled and mapped the unexplored west thereby opening the entire area for settlement. The Bison was our $10.00 denomination from 1901 until the Andrew Jackson "poker chip" appeared in 1923 - an unusually long use for those days. The bill helped popularize the "Wild West" of the times and was issued in nine different Friedberg numbers from Fr 114 - Fr 122 illustrating its long history of different Treasury Secretary and Treasurer of the U.S. over its 22 year life.
