Battle Abbey Gatehouse.
This block of Battle Abbey Gatehouse is one of the best executed examples in the entire catalogue of Tunbridge Ware architectural views. This writing slope is predominantly veneered in Brazilian Rosewood. The light coloured veneer surrounding the Abbey is Holly. Floral and chequer banding borders the two central panels. The waisted sides are also decorated with a narrow floral band. The interior is exposed by opening two flaps, the smaller flap conceals the pen and inkwell storage areas. The larger flap or fall, lifts forward to reveal the original writing surface. This burgundy coloured velvet has a tooled border. Half of the writing surface lifts to show a mahogany veneered document storage compartment. The original inkwells are in very good condition. A replacement key will lock the box. This box has been restored to the highest standard. Tunbridge Ware of this type was produced as souvenirs by Victorian entrepreneurs in the historic town of Tunbridge Wells, a spa town whose origins may be traced back many hundreds of years. Many of the timbers used in the manufacture of Tunbridge Ware are indigenous to the local area.
