At only 25 years old, Kevin"Turkey" Merck has established himself in the Georgia folk pottery community,no small feat considering the history and expanse of a centuries old Southeast tradition. In the five years that he has been potting in Gainesville, GA, Turkey has been recognized for his unique sense of creativity and accute attention to detail, especially in his animal sculptures and original "Stump" faces. With his pottery career already gaining momentum, one can only imagine how Turkey's following with expand and his work will develop.
This face jug, titled "Smoke Dawg" on the base, is quintessential of Turkey's style and demeanor: combining a realistic, cigar-smoking character, with a traditional cobalt glaze. The facial features on this jug, including wrinkles and furrows throughout, round bulging eyes, and deep, human-like ears, accentuates the character's expression and the jugs intricate detail. The cigar piece, complete with glowing red ashes and "rolled" spiral design is also worth mentioning. Turkey even uses the back of the jug as a canvas to display his innovative creativity- at the base of the large, sturdy handle you will find a miniaturized version of the large "face" depicted on the front, complete with cigar and bulging eye. The jug stands 8.5 inches tall with a 3 inch base and 4.5inch maximum width. The base is signed "Turkey" "Smoke Dawg" "5-16-07. Please take a look at the pictures and see for yourself! The jug will be professionally packaged and shipped through UPS, which requires that the item will be double-boxed and include shipping insurance. Estimated shipping is $15. Since this is a conservative estimate, I will gladly cover any additional shipping charges that incur. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase I will require you to return the item within 3 days of receipt and reimburse you for the cost of the item. This would not include shipping and insurance costs. I must charge sales tax for NC residents.
