This hat never saw a head due to the fact that LBJ said on March 31, 1968: (source Wikipedia):Lyndon Johnson: I shall not seek and I will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your president. (unintelligible) everyw knows how I feel. That a strong, and confident, and a vigilant American stands ready tonight to seek an honorable peace, and stands ready to defend an honored cause, whatever the price, whatever the burden, whatever the sacrifice that duty may require.
More trivia: Although Johnson withdrew from the race in March, some say he controlled the convention in order to allow himself the opportunity to run again. Ultimately, althought his control of the convention enabled him to pass his platform, he was not drafted because neither the old party bosses nor the new forces emerging within the Democratic Party wanted Johnson as their nominee. Sometimes we forget that LBJ was someone who had a serious heart attack in 1955 that almost killed him. And in those days heart medicine was not what it is today. Any, Lady Bird was always worried about this; that most Johnson men had died before the age of 65. So in 1968, she very much wanted LBJ to get out of the race. And when he wrote out that statement saying, "I will not seek the nomination in 1968", she actually wrote in "and I will not accept", just so t would not be an escape hatch.
Happy Bidding and Thanks for Looking!!!
