All edges red. The short title and year of printing are stated in elegant handwriting on the spine.The binding is only slightly rubbed on both covers. The lower spine shows a small, superficial tear of about 1.2 inches. The margins of the first few pages and some single leaves in the last part of the book have been repaired. The paper shows hardly any signs of browning or foxing. A copy of the first English edition of 1634 can be bought at Jeff Weber Rare Books (Glendale, CA, USA) for 10.000 e.Description, contents and further information:Ambroise Paré's (1510-1590) work is of great scientific and historic importance. As one of the greatest pioneers of modern French medicine, he developed many surgical methods which were kept in practice long after he died in 1590.The book at hand contains two of Paré's anatomical works. They contain many treatises on the way the human body works and explanations on how to cure diseases such as gangrene, wounds and broken bones. Groundbreaking at the time Paré's anatomical works were reprinted many times until long after his death due to popular demandApart from the elaborate title plate the volume at hand contains numerous anatomical woodcuts showing humans as well as animals. The images depict inner organs as well as bone structures and use a cut up perspective to illustrate the workings of the living body.A lot of the images also show surgical instruments, which were mostly invented and made by Paré himself. Was most of the woodcuts are quite small in size, the book contains some full-page pictures of mostly exotic animals. The text itself is decorated with many elegant woodcut initials and borders. Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) is regarded as one of the greatest pioneers of modern French medicine. He developed many surgical methods which were kept in practice long after he died in 1590.After training at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris (1533-1536), Paré worked as a military surgeon on the battlefields in Italy. In 1537-1538 he was the surgeon of Monsieur de Montejan and moved with him to Turin. The year 1542 saw Paré working on the French and European battlefields again. Apart from simple soldiers and commanders, he also looked after kings: 1552 he was ordained Chirugien du Roi of the French king Henry II and in 1562 became the first surgeon of King Charles IX. Even though he had never studied at university, Paré was called to the surgical faculty at the Collège de Saint Côme.Because of his many first hand experiences, Paré was able to develop more efficient ways of treating wounds.
