A nice World War 1 United Daughters of the Confederacy Cross ofMilitary Service with a copy of the application. Serial #5276. Made by the Medallic Arts Co. ofNew York. Orignal drape and brooch. The ribbon is frayed and split from the brooch. Nice over all patina on the planchet and hanger. Some discoloration to the rear of the planchet, not detracting. This medal could only be awarded to lineal descendants of Civil War Confederate Veterans with honorable service during the War Between the States. A Copy of the Application to the UDC is included. This Cross was awarded to1st Lt. Lewis S. Hamilton from Abingdon, Va. Awarded by Gen A. P. Stewart Chapter at Chattanooga, Tn., on Dec. 15, 1928. He enlisted on May 8, 1917 at Chattanooga, trained at Ft. Oglethrope and Camp Wheeler, Ga. He served overseas from Oct. 1918 to May 1919 with Co. I, 121st Infantry, 31st Division. He was Honorably discharged on 23June1919 at Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. He had 2 Grandfathers that served with Confederate Forces during the War for Southern Independence. One served with Co. D., 1st Va. Cavalry, being wounded at Mt. Jackson, Nov. 1864. For reference see Vernon's Collectors' Guide to Orders, Medals & Decorations, 4th Ed. page 483, item # 510: were the Cross is listed at a $175.00 valuation. A nice medal that would be an asset to any collection. NO RESERVE. I am liquidating a collection of UDC medals and will be posting more in the future.
