Memorial Service handbill for General Ulysses S. Grant at Town Hall, Melrose (Massachusetts), August 8, 1885. Single sheet folded once vertically to make four pages; each page approximately 6 x 7.75 inches; creases and minor soiling; still very good. The Order of Exercises includes a recitation, music (including the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "America"), several addresses (of ten minutes each) by local dignitaries, prayers and scripture readings. Grant died July 23, 1885. Melrose resident Mary A. Livermore, who was a member of the U.S. Sanitary Commission during the Civil War, and who served as a nursing administrator under Grant, delivered a speech on Grant's involvement with the Sanitary Commission. Livermore was also a significant activist in the women's suffrage movement. The service was organized by Selectmen from the town.
